P57 Our Lady of Willesden Pilgrim badge

This badge depicts the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child set within the horns of a crescent moon.
Willesden was one of a number of Marian shrines to appear around the edges of London in the late medieval period. Judging by the large number of surviving pilgrim badges of this type to survive, Willesden must have achieved remarkable popularity in a short time, only for its image of the Virgin to be taken to Chelsea and burnt in 1538.

Late 15th to early 16th century
